Fiberglass is a tricky substance to get rid of, especially after it has embedded itself deep into the pores of your skin. There are several methods that you can use to try to remove the fibers from your skin, but no one method is proven to work every time. You may need to try several before you find one that works.
Step 1
Step into a cold shower for about two minutes and then into a hot shower for another two minutes. The cold water will close up your pores to stop the fiberglass fibers from going any deeper into your skin. The hot water that follows opens your pores, helping to release the fibers that you just closed out with the cold water. When switching to hot water, do not make the water too hot, as this will swell your pores and only embed the fibers more. This step works better for mild cases of itching that have happened more recently. If the fibers have been in your skin for several hours or more, you may need to move on to Step 2 to get any relief.
Step 2
Use Epsom salts to try to draw the fibers out of your pores. To accomplish this, pour 1 cup of Epsom salt into a small amount of boiling water. Allow that salt to dissolve into the boiling water, and then pour the mix into a warm bath. Soak the affected areas of the skin in the Epsom salt bath for at least 30 minutes. Rinse your skin thoroughly in cool water to help remove any fibers left on the top of your skin.
Step 3
Step into a warm bath that is just steamy enough to open your pores. After your pores have been opened, take nylon stockings and gently scrape them across the affected areas. This will help pull the fibers out of your skin. This step is more for severe cases and may not be needed for small areas or for fiberglass that has been in skin for less than an hour.
Use duct tape to remove fiberglass from the skin. Use caution if you choose to use this method, as pressing too hard on the fibers could push them farther into your skin. Apply the duct tape to the affected area, pushing down very gently to apply the tape to the skin. Quickly rip the tape off the skin. This will result in the removal of the fibers, but be aware it could also result in the loss of your hair.
